Why are GA4 Audits important?
GA4 should be regarded as a cornerstone of your Marketing Technology arsenal within your MarTech stack. Ensuring that your GA4 setup is optimised and your data remains robust is paramount for the success of your online business.
GA4 offers a wealth of insights and potential for understanding your online websites and apps. It allows you to:
✅ Evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing mix in driving conversions on your website and app, providing valuable information for your paid and organic marketing teams to assess their contribution to your online business. This insight can guide decisions on where to allocate marketing investments, recognising that while tools like Google Ads can show conversions, GA4 serves as a more comprehensive “source of truth.”
✅ Identify engaging content and high-performing landing pages, empowering SEO and content teams to prioritise efforts on the content most impactful to your business objectives.
✅ Gain demographic and regional insights into your audience, facilitating targeted marketing strategies.
✅ Identify potential pain points in the customer journey, enabling you to address and improve the user experience.
✅ Assess the performance of your technical infrastructure, including devices and browsers.
✅ For ecommerce businesses, analyse product performance to optimize offerings and strategies.
Furthermore, GA4 provides powerful tools such as:
💡 Custom Exploration Reports, which allows you to build your own custom reports; regular free-from tables, page path exploration, custom funnel reports, segment overlaps, user exploration reports and more.
💡 Audience Builder, which allows your Pay-Per-Click (PPC) team to create remarketing audiences and seamlessly integrate them into their Google Ads accounts.
💡 Attribution tools to determine the most suitable attribution model for your business and marketing mix, aiding in understanding the impact of various touchpoints on conversion.
How frequent should you perform GA4 Audits?
This will depend on the type of check:
Configuration Checks – Once every 2 years should be sufficient. Google Analytics 4 is quite well-established now and they do not frequently release major features that will change/add to these checks.
Data Health Checks – Every 6 to 12 months. Your website is likely going to have updates/changes quite regularly that can affect your GA4 data. Also things like browser updates can sometimes affect data quality in your GA4 data without further website updates to accommodate these changes.
Tagging Checks – You should be checking your conversion data in your GA4 frequently and if any drop offs or dips in these key events occur the tags populating these events need to be tested immediately. For all your rest of your events you should review these whilst also reviewing your Data Health Checks (i.e. every 6 to 12 months).
